Art played a vital role during the 10-day RoundGlass Samsara Festival, dedicated to creating more awareness about the immense biodiversity of India’s wildlife and ecosystems and the threats facing them. Bringing together the works of 14 artists and photographers, the festival curated an evening of inspiration, learning, awareness, and interaction (accompanied by fine wine and cheese).
The People behind the Creations
UB City looked inviting on the evening of October 4, 2017, with distinct artwork spread out through the mall. Filmmaker Amoghavarsha displayed his photographs of nature that captured the details of tiny lifeforms. Photographer Bhushan Bagadia’s images captured the splendour of sharks and other marine creatures, while the abstraction of Satish Bhaisare’s paintings gave varying views of nature to observers. Harisha Chennangod used burnt wood and acrylic paintings in his art to bring attention to crimes against nature. Pavithra Chowdappa themed her paintings around mountains, which she painted using black ink made from the carbon in polluted air.
The intricacies in Sachin Deo’s artwork—collages using fabric and digital print—evoked the intricacies of the environment. Pooja Gupta’s hand illustrations and digital art on different themes around animal diversity drew everyone’s attention. Tasneem Khan exhibited marine photographs from the Indian Ocean, while Umeed Mistry’s underwater photographs highlighted important threats.
Kazi Nasir’s life-like paintings drew admiration for their impeccable representations of nature; while Milind Nayak’s abstract art was a treat of colours mixed with patterns of trees. Srikala Gangi Reddy’s collection of terrestrial abstract paintings depicted earth’s colours in dreamlike representations. Gopinath Subbanna made an art installation using brass and porcelain to portray the beauty of floral life on Earth.
An Evening to Remember
Complementing the stunning visuals was a music performance by Grammy® Nominee Lonnie Park, followed by the Men’s Choir at The Collection, and the Raveolution String Quartet.
