The lion-tailed macaques of the Western Ghats live in territorial troops of 15 to 25 that are governed by one dominant male and a strict social hierarchy. When a male reaches sexual maturity, he leaves the troop he was born in, to find a new one of his own. The defending male tries to scare the invader with loud cries. If warnings fail, they fight. The winner takes the territory and troop.

There are under 4,000 lion-tailed macaques in the Western Ghats. It is their only home.
