More than a dozen schools from Bengaluru participated in the inter-school art competition RoundGlass Samsara Children’s Festival that took place on 11thAug 2017. The themes centred around the predicaments facing our planet and environment.
The budding artists sat comfortably at the outdoor amphitheatre of UB City on that pleasant August day and channelised their imaginations onto paper, armed with supplies – canvas, paints and palettes – provided by RoundGlass Samsara.
The students numbering more than a hundred, were divided into two categories; Standard 5 to Standard 8 making up the junior group, and Standard 9 to Standard 12 making up the senior group. The theme could be chosen from among the four topics that they were provided: ‘Nature and landscape’, ‘The landscape’, ‘Let’s make this world a better place’, and ‘Humans and the natural world – a coexistence’.
With a two-hour time limit, the young artists set to work, turning in canvases that showed a 100 different perspectives. They painted dense forests and the animals that inhabit them, drew detailed painting of trees, and showed scenes of human coexistence with nature, as well as the impact of our activities on the environment. Many used the painting as a way to propose solutions for mitigating the human impact on the environment. More than anything, the paintings reflected a deep sense of enjoyment and joy in spending time in the natural world, which left the judges feeling positive about the future of our planet.
All artworks were meaningful in their unique ways with well-executed brushstrokes, so, the judges had a hard time choosing the top three in each category. In fact, the judges ended up awarding four prizes in each category, instead of three. In the junior category, the first prize was won by Parashuram of Parikrma School (Jayanagar). The second prize was awarded to Archisha Chanda from National Centre for Excellence and Siya Jacob from Vidyashilp Academy. The third prize went to Fariha Shiraz of Delhi Public School (Whitefield). In the senior category, Brishti Kundu of Delhi Public School (Whitefield) won the first prize. Gowri Kolal from Army Public School and Ardra AH from National Centre for Excellence both won the second prize. The third prize was awarded to Puja Das from Army Public School.
All participants were presented certificates at the end of the event, and the winners were awarded their trophies later at the RoundGlass Samsara Summit 2017, held at National Institute of Advanced Studies. The paintings, too, were returned to the young artists so they could keep their clever artwork – each one a masterpiece and a memento.
